Not Everyone in Your Circle Will Celebrate You

Have you ever shared good news with someone you love, only to walk away feeling like they weren't as happy for you as you expected them to be?
Maybe it was a new opportunity, a personal achievement, a step toward healing, or a dream finally coming to life. You expected encouragement, support, or excitement, but instead you sensed distance, indifference, or even negativity.
One of the hardest lessons I have learned is that not everyone in your circle will celebrate you.
As we grow, heal, and step into new seasons of our lives, we often expect the people closest to us to be our biggest supporters. We assume that family and friends will be happy to see us succeed, overcome obstacles, and become better versions of ourselves. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.
Sometimes people will smile in your face but speak differently when you are not around. They may applaud you publicly but criticize you privately. They may tell you they are proud of you, yet their actions reveal something completely different.
When this happens, it can be painful, especially when it comes from people you love.
For a long time, I struggled to understand why someone would have a problem with another person's growth. Why would anyone be bothered by healing, success, or positive change?
Over time, I realized that not everyone is comfortable watching others grow. Your healing may remind them of wounds they have not addressed. Your courage may highlight the risks they are afraid to take. Your progress may challenge the version of you they have become comfortable with.
But their discomfort is not your responsibility.
You cannot shrink yourself to make others comfortable. You cannot stop growing because someone else prefers the old version of you. You cannot spend your life seeking approval from people who have already decided not to celebrate your journey.
The truth is, genuine love does not compete.
People who truly love you want to see you win. They celebrate your victories without feeling threatened. They encourage your growth without feeling diminished by it. They support your healing because they want to see you whole.
This does not mean everyone will understand your journey, and it certainly does not mean everyone will agree with every decision you make. But there is a difference between disagreement and resentment. There is a difference between constructive honesty and hidden negativity.
As I continue my own journey, I am learning that not everyone deserves a front-row seat in my life. Loving people does not mean giving them unlimited access to my peace. Sometimes wisdom means recognizing who genuinely supports you and who only supports the version of you that benefits them.
That realization is not about bitterness. It is about discernment.
Today, I choose to keep growing even when others do not understand. I choose to keep healing even when it makes some people uncomfortable. I choose to keep walking in faith, trusting that God did not place dreams, purpose, and growth in my life for me to hide them.
If you have ever felt hurt because someone close to you could not celebrate your growth, know this:
Keep moving forward.
Keep becoming who God created you to be.
The right people will not be threatened by your growth. They will be inspired by it.
And those are the people worth keeping close.
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." — Isaiah 41:10
